Therapeutic vapes are vaping products used to aid in smoking cessation or to manage nicotine dependence. From 1 October 2024, pharmacists will be able to supply these products without a prescription under specific conditions.
In the case of therapeutic vapes, this means that they have not been officially approved by the TGA for smoking cessation or nicotine dependence. However, pharmacists are allowed to supply them under certain conditions, and informed consent must be obtained from the patient. This ensures that patients understand the product is unapproved and may carry certain risks or uncertainties.
No, from 1 October 2024, patients aged 18 years or over will no longer need a prescription to access vapes with less than 20 mg/ml nicotine (if eligible).
You will need to provide evidence of your age and identity, as nicotine vapes can only be supplied to people aged 18 years or older; you will need to meet eligibility criteria.
Yes, pharmacists will provide advice. They will also inform you about alternative cessation therapies and smoking cessation support services.

If you experience an adverse event or if there is a defect in the vaping product, inform the pharmacist immediately.
If you suspect nicotine poisoning, especially in children, seek urgent medical attention immediately. Nicotine can be toxic if absorbed through the skin, inhaled, or ingested, and small amounts (3-10 mL) can be fatal for children without prompt medical care. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, breathing difficulties, seizures, and even cardiac arrest. If nicotine is spilled on the skin, flush the area with running water. No, therapeutic vapes cannot be supplied to individuals under 18 years old, unless prescribed by a medical or nurse practitioner.
Yes, before supplying the vape, the pharmacist will inform you that it is an unapproved therapeutic good and will obtain your informed consent.
